Traditional vs technology
11th May 2022
The working world has been changing for many years now with technology advancing faster than ever before. However, some industries may be falling behind when it comes to modernising their ways of working. Although technology is advancing and modernising the working world, of course, there are still some traditional practices that are beneficial and will likely remain in place for certain industries. Here, we take a look at traditional vs technology. What works best? How can technology help with what your business may be lacking?
Communication:
Mobile apps, Zoom, Teams and many more have all greatly benefitted how we communicate. Throughout the pandemic, a lot of this technology kept us in contact with our closest. So how does it benefit the workplace?
- Technology has made it possible for employers to offer flexible working. With the likes of Zoom and Teams, technical advancements have enabled people to remain connected to colleagues, wherever they are. - Technology can save time. Rather than sitting on a phone call for 15 minutes or continuously missing each other’s call, apps and emails have enabled us to ask a question within 30 seconds and receive a reply quickly. - Mass communication. You can easily send out emails, newsletters, app notifications etc. to hundreds of people at once, informing them of company or industry news, efficiently.
Although technology has done a great job at enhancing our ways of working, there are still some negatives. For example, human interaction. Physically being with and seeing your colleagues can boost morale. Team meetings, such as creative thinking sessions, can work better when you’re all together. It’s good to bounce ideas off each other, which can be difficult via emails or over a video call. Cyber security is something to be cautious of. Of course, as technology advances, so does the risk of security. Hackers are becoming more intelligent, so it is critical that whilst you invest in technology, you also invest in exceptional security. Technology isn’t perfect, there will be bugs that need fixing and regular updates to ensure security is as good as it possibly can be, however, overall we believe it has had a positive impact on the working world.
Training and learning:
"Continuous learning is the minimum requirement for success in any field." ~ Brian Tracy Continuous learning and training are vital in both working and general life and technology has enabled people to train and learn from almost anywhere, but there may be a reason why eLearning hasn’t completely taken off.
So what are the pros and cons?
Pros:
- eLearning is extensive. No matter the size of the organisation, every employee will be able to have access to the training, at the same time, whereas traditional training, is limited. There are only so many people you can fit within a room and educate them. - Using technology to train people and broaden their skills can be organised and completed quickly, whereas training in person needs to be scheduled, and as previously mentioned, can only accommodate a certain number of people. - eLearning saves both money and time. There’s no need to hire spaces, trainers or staff to ensure training is complete. Initially, costs for eLearning tools and technology may be expensive, but overall, investing in technology will be beneficial.
Cons:
- eLearning is linear. Some people learn better with human interaction, and this is, of course, lacking when it comes to eLearning. With a human trainer, you’re able to communicate much more easily and in more ways. - eLearning isn’t practical for people who learn better by “doing” rather than reading. It may result in that when the time comes that the training needs to be applied, it is much more difficult than anticipated. - Traditional training is usually scheduled into the working week, and in a training room, therefore distractions that come with eLearning – seeing emails come through or saving and coming back later because something more important has popped up – are absent.
